What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari (literally "one hundred and twenty") is the classical Vedic system that divides your life into nine consecutive planetary periods called Mahadashas. Each Mahadasha is ruled by one of the nine grahas, and the years-per-graha are fixed:

Total: 120 years. Which Mahadasha you are born into is determined by your natal Moon's exact position within its nakshatra (each nakshatra is ruled by one of the nine grahas). If your birth-Moon falls at the very start of a nakshatra ruled by Jupiter, you are born at the start of a full Jupiter Mahadasha; if it falls three-quarters through, you begin life with only a quarter of that Mahadasha remaining before the next one starts.
Mahadasha, Antardasha, Pratyantardasha
Vimshottari is a nested system. Each Mahadasha subdivides into nine Antardashas (sub-periods), each Antardasha into nine Pratyantardashas, and so on. So even during a "Saturn Mahadasha", the current 6-month Antardasha (say, of Venus) will flavour the felt experience — you might feel Saturn's overall structural pressure interpreted through a Venus lens of relationships and beauty.

How to interpret your dasha honestly
A Mahadasha is not destiny — it's the karmic weather system of that chapter of life. A Saturn Mahadasha does not mean "bad years"; it means the themes of Saturn (structure, patience, delayed rewards, responsibility) will be foregrounded. For someone with a well-placed Saturn in the natal chart, a Saturn Mahadasha can be a peak career-building period. For someone with a weak or afflicted natal Saturn, the same period may feel obstructive.
This is why any honest Dasha reading has to be a conversation between the dasha (the timing) and the natal chart (the ground state).
