The 9 Grahas: Meet the Planets of Your Kundli

A quick tour of the nine planets Vedic astrology uses — what each one governs, which weekday and direction it rules, its exaltation and debilitation signs, and its gemstone. The starting point before any deeper study.

In short

Vedic astrology reads your life through nine planets — the seven classical grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) plus the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Each governs a specific set of themes, rules a weekday and direction, has a sign where it flourishes and one where it struggles, and comes with a classical remedy toolkit. This guide is your starting map.

Why nine and not eight?

Astronomy today counts eight planets. Vedic astrology counts nine grahas — the seven that the ancient sages could see with the naked eye (Sun and Moon are counted as planets in astrology, though they are a star and a satellite in astronomy), plus Rahu and Ketu, the two mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path.

Rahu and Ketu aren't physical bodies you can point to in the sky. But eclipse-prediction — one of the earliest concrete achievements of Vedic astronomy — depends on tracking them precisely, and classical texts observed that when the Moon crosses these points, human behaviour and events cluster in specific ways. So Vedic astrology treats them as full grahas with karmic weight.

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — used in modern Western astrology — aren't part of the classical Vedic system because they weren't visible without telescopes. Contemporary practitioners occasionally reference them, but classical prediction relies on the nine.

The classification: benefic, malefic, neutral

Every planet carries a temperament. Classical texts sort them roughly:

"Malefic" is not "bad"

Modern Vedic teachers translate the classical papa graha as "malefic" for lack of a better word, but the meaning is closer to "difficult, testing, growth-inducing". Saturn is a malefic; Saturn also builds the most durable careers. Mars is a malefic; Mars is also the karaka of courage. Malefic energy is what makes people grow. It hurts on the way; it works over time.

Beyond the natural classification, each planet also becomes a functional benefic or malefic based on which houses it rules for your specific rising sign. A functional analysis is chart-specific and often reverses the natural label — that's for a deeper reading, not this overview.

The nine grahas, at a glance

Exalted in: Taurus (some say Gemini) · Debilitated in: Scorpio (some say Sagittarius) · Exaltation for Rahu/Ketu is disputed across classical texts.

A quick note on Rahu and Ketu

Because they're mathematical points rather than physical planets, Rahu and Ketu don't behave like the classical seven — they don't rule signs, and their exaltation / debilitation is genuinely contested across texts. What every school agrees on: they matter enormously. Rahu Mahadasha (18 years) and Ketu Mahadasha (7 years) are two of the most transformative chapters in a life. See our Rahu Mahadasha + Ketu Antardasha guide for a deeper look.

The classical friendships and enmities

Grahas have relationships. Some planets are natural friends, some are enemies, some are neutral — and this affects how they behave when they occupy each other's signs or aspect each other. The classical grid (Parashara's Naisargika Maitri):

Rahu and Ketu aren't included in Parashara's natural-friendship grid because it predates their formal inclusion in the graha family. Modern practice uses ad-hoc rules for them.

How grahas move (and why speed matters)

The nine grahas move at very different speeds through the zodiac. This dramatically affects how often you feel their influence:

The slowest planets — Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu — shape life chapters. The fastest — Moon — shapes daily mood. That's why Rashifal is Moon-based and dashas are structured around Vimshottari (which starts from Moon's exact position at birth).

The faster the graha, the more it colours today. The slower the graha, the more it colours the decade.

What to do with all of this

Reading your own chart is a lifetime skill, not a weekend course. But this overview gives you the vocabulary. When you generate your Janma Kundli and see "Jupiter in Cancer, house 4", you can now translate:

Reading: exalted Jupiter blessing the home and inner life. That's a substantial gift — usually a nurturing home, a wise or influential mother, and inner contentment across life. That's how a single line of chart data becomes a real insight.

Where to go next

  1. Generate your free Janma Kundli on Shubh Bhagya — see which grahas sit where in your chart, and which yogas are active.
  2. Read the deep-dive on Shani (Saturn) — the most-feared and most-misunderstood graha. If you understand Saturn, half the chart becomes clearer.
  3. Learn about Vimshottari Dasha — see our 120-year life map guide. Once you know which Mahadasha you're currently in, everything else lands better.
Final thought

The nine grahas aren't nine judges deciding your fate. They're nine colours in a palette you were painted with. Some colours are warmer, some colder; some make the picture bright, some make it deep. Understanding which colours are strong in your painting is what a good reading does — not to explain what happened, but to help you use what you already have.

Frequently asked

Why does Vedic astrology use 9 planets when astronomy only counts 8?
The Vedic count is the seven classical grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn — all visible with the naked eye) plus Rahu and Ketu, the two lunar nodes where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path. Rahu and Ketu are mathematical points, not physical bodies, but Vedic astrology treats them as grahas because their positions correlate strongly with karmic and psychological patterns. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are used in Western astrology but not in classical Vedic — they weren't visible to ancient sages.
What's the difference between a benefic and a malefic planet?
Natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon, Mercury when not conjunct malefics) tend to give pleasant results. Natural malefics (Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu, Ketu, waning Moon) tend to give difficult results — but 'difficult' means testing, structural, growth-inducing, not simply bad. Any planet can also become a functional benefic or malefic for a specific chart depending on which houses it rules — that's chart-specific and often reverses the natural classification.
Which planet is 'the strongest' in a chart?
There's no universal answer — it depends on placement. A planet is strong when it sits in its own sign, in exaltation, in a kendra (1st/4th/7th/10th) or trine (1st/5th/9th), aspected by Jupiter, or forming a named yoga. A weak planet is debilitated, combust (too close to the Sun), in an enemy sign, or in a dusthana (6th/8th/12th). Most charts have some strong and some weak — the mix is what makes the reading interesting.
What does exaltation and debilitation mean?
Each planet has one sign where it performs best (exaltation — highest expression of its qualities) and one directly opposite where it performs worst (debilitation — its qualities distort). Sun exalted in Aries, debilitated in Libra. Moon exalted in Taurus, debilitated in Scorpio. Jupiter exalted in Cancer, debilitated in Capricorn. Saturn exalted in Libra, debilitated in Aries. These matter enormously for how a planet behaves in the chart.
Do I really need to wear a gemstone for my ruling planet?
No. Gemstones only help when the planet is a functional benefic in your chart and needs strengthening. Wearing the wrong stone (for a functional malefic) can destabilise things quickly. Classical practice is to consult a knowledgeable astrologer BEFORE wearing any gem — especially Blue Sapphire (Saturn) and Red Coral (Mars), the two most likely to backfire. Devotional remedies (mantras, donations, deity worship) are safer and don't require a chart review.
