What is Panchang?
Panchang (literally "five limbs") is the classical Vedic almanac. Five daily angas describe the character of the day astronomically and karmically:
- Vara (weekday) — Sunday=Sun, Monday=Moon, Tuesday=Mars, Wednesday=Mercury, Thursday=Jupiter, Friday=Venus, Saturday=Saturn. The day's lord shapes its overall tone.
- Tithi (lunar day) — the angular distance between Sun and Moon, divided into 30 parts. Shukla Paksha (1-15) is waxing, Krishna Paksha (16-30) is waning. Some tithis have specific classical characters (Ekadashi = fasting, Purnima = culmination, Amavasya = ancestral rites, Chaturthi = Ganesh energy).
- Nakshatra (lunar constellation) — the Moon moves through 27 nakshatras in ~27 days, so this is the fastest-changing sky signal and grounds today's emotional weather.
- Yoga — the Sun+Moon combination divided into 27 yoga windows. Vaidhriti and Vyatipata are the two most inauspicious yogas and are traditionally avoided for muhurta.
- Karana — half-tithi. Vishti (Bhadra) is the karana traditionally avoided for auspicious starts.
Rahu Kaal, Abhijit Muhurta, Choghadiya
Beyond the five angas, classical Vedic timing includes sub-day windows:
- Rahu Kaal — a specific 1/8 slice of daylight considered inauspicious for beginnings. It shifts weekday-by-weekday and depends on your sunrise/sunset (which shifts by location). We compute it correctly for your city.
- Abhijit Muhurta — a ~48-minute window around solar noon, considered the most universally auspicious slot of the day. Perfect for signing important documents, starting a business call, or committing to any decision.
- Yamaganda / Gulikai — two more classical inauspicious windows on the same weekday-lord principle as Rahu Kaal (not shown above, deferred to a next release).
- Choghadiya — 8 equal daytime windows named Amrit / Shubh / Labh (auspicious), Rog / Kaal (avoid), Udveg / Chal (neutral). Which name each window gets rotates with weekday. Useful for picking a specific shop-open time or product-launch minute.
How Bhagya computes it
All calculations use Swiss Ephemeris on sidereal Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard Indian classical convention. Sunrise/sunset for your city are computed from the local latitude/longitude + timezone, not approximated. Rahu Kaal, Abhijit, and Choghadiya windows are derived from that local sunrise/sunset — they will not match tables that hardcode Mumbai-only or Delhi-only times.
